January Sunset

The monumental ruin of Desmond Castle is undeniably the most prominent structure of the town. It’s been a feature in a number of paintings, but mostly from the angle that would include the river Deel, on which it sits. I am most familiar with this angle though, as it’s the view I can see from my back garden. This January sunset was such a perfectly dramatic backdrop for this building of so many stories.
There is on going preservation and restoration, so it seemed right to subtly include an impression of the scaffolding. You can also just about see the Kingspan factory sign in the distance.
